Leaf Stamping Terra Cotta Pot

Leaf stamping using different foliage shapes dipped in paint to decorate the terra cotta pot as a DIY flower planter.

Leaf Stamping Activity

This DIY Painted terra cotta pot is one of the easy activities for spring, summer and fall seasons, as there are so many foliage shapes you can find in the garden or when you go for a walk in the park.

Then you can use the clay pot planter for the flower. If you like to spend the summer evening outside, use the painted planter for the citronella candle holder.

DIY Painted Clay Pot

If you only have small terra cotta pots, using three or four leaves is enough for foliage stamps. The clay pot I use is around 4″ in diameter and enough to hold a plant that grows on the 4″ plastic planter.

Then use various shapes and sizes of foliage if you are using a large terra cotta pot.

Supply To Make Leaf Stamping Terra Cotta Pot

I use acrylic paint I got from a dollar store. Any craft store carries various brands of acrylic paint.

You can seal the inside of the clay pot first by using the sealer spray or a specific product for the clay pot sealer. Sealing it is an optional process.

Applying a large amount of paint on the clay pot is easier using the foam brush.

  • Leaf: delphinium leaf, raspberry leaf, strawberry leaf, or use different leaves like maple or oak
  • white acrylic paint
  • Red, turquoise, blue acrylic paint
  • foam brush
  • 3 small paintbrush
  • 1 clay pot
  • 1 clay pot saucer

Leaf Stamping Tutorial On Terra Cotta Pots

Use the foam brush to paint the terra cotta pot with white acrylic paint for the base, and leave it until dry, around 20 to 30 minutes. Depending on the acrylic brand you are using, always read the instruction on its label.

Double-layer the paint by painting the white over the first coat.

Use a small paintbrush to paint the underside of the leaf with the colour of your choice. Just apply a thin layer of paint.

Press the leaf on the painted terra cotta pot. The stamped leaf would show its vein leaf.

Paint another leaf and stamp it on the terra cotta pot by creating the colour or shape pattern.

Let the leaf-stamped clay pot dries up for around 20 to 30 minutes.

If you want to seal your painted clay pot, use the spray sealer or clay pot sealer.

I skipped the sealing process for this project as I only used the painted flower pot on the covered porch.

The paint colour doesn’t have to be the same as on this project. You can use any other acrylic paint colours available.

I recommend using white paint for the base. If you prefer, then you can paint different colour over white.

Gather some different shape foliage, then use it to decorate the terra cotta pots. #leafstamping #decoratedplanter Share on X
